Reincarnated as an Energy with a System
Chapter 1816: Another Attack

Ning took a moment to take it all in. The Gallows had been so big that even decades after their disappearance, their names still hung on the mouth of every person living in the shadow of the city.

Every police officer, every detective, every petty criminal knew of their name. So, if a man associated not only with the Gallows but also the main reason for their downfall had just been attacked, it was easy to assume that had been the reason why.

“Who would know the ghoul was alive?” Ning asked. “And why would they wait 20 years to kill him?”

“How could we know?” Larissa said. “Mira, continue checking through the report. Surely we’ll find some information about him. See if you can also check who else had these records accessed in the past.”

Mira got to work, leaving Ning with nothing else to do. He went to the break room, where he lounged around on the couch, watching the morning workings of the stations.

Various cops walked by, each one either signing off after a long night duty or signing in for their shift. There seemed little bias in who was hired, but the majority that were hired were still the ’good’ races.

Larissa walked into the room a while later, going for a cup of coffee.

“Any new info?” Ning asked.

“Nothing just yet,” she said.

“What about Jack?”

“The cameras around the back of the apartment were destroyed. We have no footage,” Larissa said with an annoyed look.

“They were broken by the intruder?” he asked.

“No, some other squabble. Waveshot had a fight there a week ago. That took out the cameras. Our culprit must’ve known what had happened and took advantage of the situation,” Larissa said.

Ning took a moment to remember Waveshot was the 22nd Hero in the ranking, capable of creating sonic waves.

“I still think there’s a chance this is a racial crime, but it looks more and more like this might be someone from the ghoul’s past, coming back to end him.”

Ning nodded and got up. “I should go help Mira cross-examine every member of the Gallows that is still alive. They would all have a reason to kill him.”

Ning spent some time with Mira, helping her through the information. As early morning slowly turned to day, they were lost in their work.

Mira yawned as she worked, too tired to keep working.

“Go sleep in the break room,” Ning told her. “You’ve been up for most of the night.”

“I can’t sleep now,” she said as she yawned. “I… got work to do.”

Ning sighed and kept working.

Jack returned a while later, completely unsuccessful in his endeavors. “This is hard. There are no cameras on the backstreet. The neighbors didn’t hear or see anything. And whoever it was that attacked him left no physical evidence. We’re now searching for a needle in a haystack.”

Larissa walked out of the other room in a hurry. “Well, this might be good news for us then. The needle has moved.”

“Another attack?” Ning asked.

“Someone tried to kill the old man in the hospital. Thankfully, our people got there in time, so the man ran away.”

“He was attacked again?” Ning asked in surprise. “Then this is either targeted, or the criminal worries he’s been seen. But, how could he know the man was alive?”

“There are a number of ways, sadly,” Larissa said. “Anyway, we need to go now.”

“Let us hope now that the hospital’s cameras got something.”

The four drove to the hospital again, where they found the cops and talked with them. From them, they came to understand what had happened.

They had both been caught off guard by something and knocked out. When they came to, they found the man standing above the ghoul. Had they been any later, the victim might’ve died.

“He ran away the moment he saw us come to,” one of the guards said.

“He? Are you sure it was a man?” Larissa asked.

“We can’t guarantee since he was wearing dark clothes, but he had the shape of a man.”

Larissa turned around. “Find me the footage of every camera that leads to this room.”

Jack nodded and left.

Ning walked around the room, looking at everything. He scanned the machines, seeing the old man’s regular vitals. Nothing had been touched. Nothing had been messed with.

Ning placed his palm atop the unconscious old man, imagining himself as someone who wanted to kill this old man. Did the attacker want to savor this moment? Or had he waited for something?

“What are you doing?” Larissa asked.

“Hmm? Oh, just trying to think what would have been going on through our attacker’s mind,” Ning said. “What sort of hatred would cause someone to come attack a man while he was unconscious in a hospital.”

“A cruel man, no doubt,” Larissa said. “They’ve guaranteed it’s a man, one of the men-like races.”

“So Humans, Elves, and Angels,” Ning said. “Were his ears hidden?”

“He wore a hooded jacket.”

Ning nodded. They couldn’t find him that way.

“They describe his skin as slightly tanned, so it’s not possible for them to be High Elves. Could be a Wood Elf instead.”

“Could be,” Ning said. “That should narrow things down a lot. There weren’t many humans working with the Gallow syndicate.”

Larissa nodded. “That is what I think too. I’ve had Mari collect a list of names. We’ll have something more definite to start with soon.”

Ning was happy to hear that.

Jack knocked on the door. “Captain, there’s a small issue.”

Ning left the room and made his way to the surveillance room to find a group of people standing around. The head of the hospital introduced himself and told them of the situation.

“Most of the cameras that should be facing the room were turned away by someone. We are trying to figure out who, but I don’t think we have any information to provide through this,” the head said. “I’m afraid this attacker had thought things through.”
