Chapter 1566: Reviving Electricity (2)
“I guess we’re ready to try it out.”
Staring at the finished contraption in front of them, Valyr could not help but take a deep breath as a solemn expression appeared on his face.
Though the two had done everything they could to make their attempt at generating electricity as safe as it could possibly be, the young man still felt a hint of danger emanating from it.
’I really need to find some insulation material once I’m out of the inheritance.’ Briefly focusing his attention on the exposed wires dangling just a few centimeters above the ground, he then shifted his focus towards the left where Ryvrthe’s efforts could be found.
Deciding to make full use of the broken and incomplete stators they’ve collected from the west wing, the man crafted a new stator from scratch using the parts that were still intact.
Although he found it somewhat odd not to just use one of the complete stators for their first attempt at generating electricity, the young man also felt that creating one out of the broken parts also made sense.
After all, if they were able to confirm that the stator Ryvrthe created from broken parts worked, then not only would that mean the man could rest at ease while making more of them, but they would also be able to increase the amount of power they generated.
Perhaps not to the extent of matching the power output of one of the alternators, but definitely more than enough to charge the language learning device and more.
Paying a bit of attention to how much wire they wrapped around the stator’s contacts, Valyr eventually focused his attention towards the last few components at the end of the entire thing.
“A rectifier and a voltage regulator,” murmured the young man, feeling a hint of pride at how he and Ryvrthe had connected the two components together.
Back on Earth, where soldering irons, soldering wires, and flux were plentiful, such a feat would easily be achievable as long as one had a pair of steady hands.
However, on Veldanyr, where none of that existed, the two greatly relied on their knowledge of metals, temperatures, as well as their high stats to achieve a similar effect.
“…Huh.” Looking through every component of the contraption once more, Valyr soon noticed that the contraption lacked a crucial part for it to work.
“Now that I notice it, how are we going to turn the stator?”
Based on the design Ryvrthe used in creating the new stator, the central portion of the stator would have to be rotated in order for it to start generating electricity.
Yet, aside from a slight protrusion at its center, there was nothing Valyr nor Ryvrthe could grip on that would allow them to turn it.
“Are we going to use an engine to turn it?” asked the young man after that, looking at Ryvrthe with both confusion and curiosity.
“That would be a bit too much,” answered the latter as he chuckled, only to then make his way to one of the piles of scrap neatly arranged at the side of his room.
Clank! Crash! Rustle…
Looking through the various scrap parts that made up the pile, the man eventually found the item he was looking for, which was an S-shaped piece of metal that had a wooden handle on one of its sides.
However, rather than return to where Valyr was with that piece of metal, Ryvrthe continued to rummage through the scrap piles a bit more, picking up what looked to be a box with wires attached to it and a glass bulb with metal sticking out of one end.
“Is that…” Unsurprisingly, once he laid his eyes upon those items, the young man’s eyes began to glisten as he looked at Ryvrthe with excitement. “Are those what I think they are?”
The latter nodded as he laughed. “Honestly glad I kept them aside.”
“Then again, even if it took far longer for the Forsaken to relearn how to harness the power of electricity, I would’ve still kept it.”
Continuing to look at the three items Ryvrthe grabbed from the scrap piles, a question soon surfaced on Valyr’s mind. “I get the crank.”
“But what’s the tester and the bulb for?”
“The bulb’s to check if we have electricity actually flowing at the end of the regulator,” replied Ryvrthe, not surprised that Valyr recognized them. “As for the tester…”
“It’s to check if the stator can generate enough electricity to recharge the device.”
“Of course, if it doesn’t generate that much, then the second-best thing would be for it to recharge the batteries,” the man continued, slightly shrugging his shoulders.
Hearing those words, Valyr’s expression turned calm as he nodded. “How much power would the stator need to generate for the device?”
“30 watts,” answered Ryvrthe. “If you want me to be a bit more specific, 12 volts at 2.5 amperes.”
Valyr slightly frowned at those words. “And if we want to charge the batteries instead?”
“5 watts,” the man replied. “Or 5 volts at 1 ampere.”
“I see.” Although the figure Ryvrthe gave to recharge the battery had put him at ease, Valyr still felt a bit nervous towards finding out how much the stator could actually generate.
As far as he knew, a stator that was similarly-sized to what Ryvrthe had made would only be able to able to average around 10 watts at most.
Of course, if he were to put more force into the crank and rotated the central portion of the stator faster, he would be able to generate more than just 10 watts out of it.
However, doing so would probably damage, if not destroy the other components that made up the contraption.
Especially if they were meant to handle a lot of power at once.
’…Either way, let’s see how it goes.’ Ridding himself of the discordant thoughts in his head, the young man took in a deep breath as he retrieved the crank from Ryvrthe’s hands.
Then, inserting the crank into the slight protrusion on the stator, Valyr adjusted it a bit to make sure that the crank wouldn’t break off from the stator once he began to turning it.
Checking to see if Ryvrthe had already positioned the bulb on the output contacts of the regulator, the young man eventually took in yet another deep breath to compose himself, only to then firmly grasp on the crank’s wooden handle.
“Here goes nothing…”
